BDS Dental provides dental crown and bridge treatment from our well-established private practice on Finchley Road in Golders Green, NW11. Whether you have a damaged or heavily restored tooth, or a gap left by a missing tooth, we offer a range of restorative options to help protect your teeth and restore your smile.
Our team is led by Dr. Ellie Bergin (GDC No: 76585) and Dr. Ian Davis (GDC No: 74993), who between them bring over 50 years of clinical experience. Both are registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) and the practice is regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
A dental crown — sometimes called a cap — is a custom-made restoration that fits over and covers the entire visible surface of a tooth. Crowns are used to protect teeth that have been weakened, damaged, or significantly restored, restoring both their strength and their appearance.
Your dentist may recommend a crown in the following situations:
In each case, the crown protects what remains of the natural tooth while restoring normal function and appearance.
The material used for your crown will depend on the position of the tooth, the amount of natural tooth structure remaining, and your personal preferences. At BDS Dental, we offer the following options:
We use CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) technology in the production of certain crown restorations. This precision-milled approach allows for highly accurate, well-fitting crowns with a natural appearance. Your dentist will advise on whether a CAD/CAM crown is appropriate for your specific case.
Crown treatment at BDS Dental typically takes place over two appointments.
At your first appointment, your dentist will prepare the tooth by reshaping it slightly to allow the crown to fit correctly. An impression is taken and sent to a dental laboratory, along with shade information so the crown can be matched precisely to your surrounding teeth. A temporary crown is fitted to protect the prepared tooth while the permanent one is being made.
At your second appointment, the temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is checked for fit and appearance before being bonded permanently in place. Your dentist will make any minor adjustments needed to ensure your bite feels comfortable and natural.
A dental bridge is a fixed restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. It works by anchoring an artificial tooth (known as a pontic) to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. The result is a seamless, non-removable replacement that restores the appearance and function of the missing tooth.
Bridges are permanently fixed in place and are generally preferred by patients who want a stable, long-term solution that does not need to be removed for cleaning.
A bridge may be a suitable option when:
Your dentist will assess your teeth, gums, and bone structure at your consultation and discuss with you whether a bridge, an implant, or another option is the most appropriate solution for your specific circumstances.
Bridges can be made from porcelain fused to metal, full porcelain, or zirconia — the same range of materials available for crowns. Your dentist will advise on which material is best suited to the location and function of the bridge, and how to achieve a result that looks natural alongside your remaining teeth.
Like crowns, bridge treatment typically involves two appointments. At the first, the supporting teeth (known as abutment teeth) are prepared to receive the bridge. Impressions are taken and a temporary bridge is fitted. At the second appointment, the permanent bridge is checked and bonded in place. Your dentist will ensure the fit, bite, and appearance are all correct before the appointment is complete.
BDS Dental has been at the centre of dental care in Golders Green for decades. Our approach to restorative dentistry is careful and conservative — we aim to preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible and recommend crowns or bridges only when the clinical evidence supports it.
Our patients tell us that what they value most is the time we take to explain options clearly and honestly. Restorative decisions can feel significant, and we believe it is important that every patient fully understands what is involved and why a particular course of treatment is being recommended before they commit to anything.
The cost of a crown or bridge depends on the material used, the complexity of the case, and the number of teeth involved. Your dentist will provide a clear, itemised cost estimate at your consultation before any treatment begins. There are no unexpected charges.

With proper care, a well-made crown can last ten to fifteen years or more. Longevity depends on the material used, where the crown is positioned, your bite, and your oral hygiene habits. Attending regular dental check-ups allows your dentist to monitor the condition of your crown and address any issues early.
Both procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during treatment. Some tenderness around the prepared tooth is normal for a day or two afterwards and settles quickly. If you experience prolonged discomfort, we encourage you to contact the practice so we can check everything is healing as expected.
A crown restores a tooth that is still present but damaged, weakened, or heavily filled. A bridge is used to replace a tooth that is missing, by spanning the gap and anchoring to the teeth on either side. In some cases, crowns are placed on the supporting teeth as part of a bridge. Your dentist will explain which option is appropriate at your consultation.
Yes, it is possible for a bridge to replace more than one missing tooth in a row, depending on the location and the strength of the supporting teeth. For larger gaps, or where the adjacent teeth are not strong enough to support a traditional bridge, dental implants may be a more suitable long-term option. Your dentist will discuss all available options with you.
In most cases, yes. Root canal treatment removes the nerve and blood supply from inside the tooth, which can leave it more brittle over time. A crown placed over the tooth after root canal treatment helps protect it from fracture and restores full function. Your dentist will advise you on the most appropriate timing and type of crown for your individual case.
