BDS Dental offers same-day dental restorations using CEREC technology at our private practice on Finchley Road in Golders Green, NW11. If you need a crown, inlay, onlay, or veneer, CEREC allows us to design, mill, and fit your restoration in a single appointment — with no temporary fittings, no second visits, and no traditional impressions.
Our experienced team, led by Dr. Ellie Bergin (GDC No: 76585) and Dr. Ian Davis (GDC No: 74993), uses CEREC as part of a broader commitment to providing restorations that are precise, durable, and natural-looking.
CEREC stands for CERamic REConstruction. It is a computer-aided design and manufacturing system (CAD/CAM) that enables a dental restoration to be designed digitally and milled from a ceramic block in the same appointment, rather than being sent to an external dental laboratory.
Traditional crown and inlay work typically involves two separate appointments: one to prepare the tooth and take impressions, and another — usually one to two weeks later — to fit the finished restoration. In between, a temporary restoration is worn while the permanent one is made off-site.
With CEREC, the entire process is completed in one visit. The precision of the digital workflow means the fit and appearance of the finished restoration are consistently excellent.
CEREC is a highly versatile system and can be used to create a range of all-ceramic restorations, including:
Your dentist will advise at your consultation whether a CEREC restoration is the most suitable option for your individual circumstances.
A CEREC appointment follows a clear sequence that replaces the traditional two-visit process with a single, extended session.
Your dentist begins by preparing the tooth in the usual way — removing decay or damaged material and shaping the tooth to receive the restoration. Local anaesthetic is used to ensure you are comfortable throughout.
Instead of taking a physical impression using putty or trays, a small intraoral camera is used to capture a precise three-dimensional digital image of the prepared tooth and surrounding teeth. This is more comfortable than traditional impressions and produces highly accurate data for the design stage.
The 3D scan is used to build a virtual model of the restoration on a dedicated design workstation. Your dentist uses this to shape the restoration digitally, ensuring it fits accurately and complements the surrounding teeth in terms of both shape and shade.
Once the design is finalised, the specifications are sent directly to an in-surgery milling machine. Your restoration is then precision-milled from a high-quality ceramic block in approximately 15 to 20 minutes. You are welcome to relax in our waiting area while this takes place.
Any finishing adjustments are made before the restoration is checked for fit, appearance, and bite. Once you and your dentist are satisfied, it is bonded permanently in place and ready to use immediately.
CEREC offers a number of practical and clinical advantages compared to the conventional two-visit laboratory process:
CEREC is a good option for many patients who need a crown, inlay, onlay, or veneer and prefer to complete treatment in a single visit. It is particularly well-suited to patients with busy schedules who would find a second appointment difficult to arrange, or those who find traditional impression-taking uncomfortable.
As with any restorative treatment, your dentist will carry out a thorough assessment before recommending CEREC. In some complex cases — for instance, where a larger bridge or multiple restorations are involved — a laboratory-made restoration may still be the most appropriate choice. Your dentist will explain the options clearly and give you their honest recommendation.
BDS Dental is a long-established private practice serving patients across Golders Green, Hampstead, Hampstead Garden Suburb, and the wider North London area. Our principal dentists have over 50 years of combined clinical experience between them, and our practice is registered with the GDC and regulated by the CQC.
We introduced CEREC technology as part of our broader commitment to offering clinically proven, patient-centred restorative care. When you attend for a CEREC appointment, you are in the hands of dentists who understand both the technology and the clinical judgement required to use it well.
The cost of a CEREC restoration depends on the type and complexity of the work involved. Your dentist will provide a clear, itemised cost estimate at your consultation before any treatment begins.

A CEREC appointment is longer than a standard dental visit, typically lasting between one and a half to two and a half hours depending on the complexity of the restoration. This includes tooth preparation, digital scanning, design, milling, and fitting — all carried out in the same session. Your dentist will give you a realistic time estimate when you book.
CEREC restorations are made from high-quality dental ceramic and are designed to be durable and long-lasting. The material and milling process produce restorations that perform comparably to many laboratory-made alternatives for crowns and inlays. In highly complex aesthetic cases, your dentist may still recommend a laboratory-fabricated restoration for the finest possible result, and will advise you accordingly.
Yes. CEREC uses tooth-coloured ceramic that is matched to the shade of your surrounding teeth. The digital design process allows for precise shaping, and the finished restoration is polished before fitting. Most patients find the result is indistinguishable from their natural teeth.
With proper care and regular dental check-ups, a CEREC crown can last ten years or more. As with any restoration, longevity is influenced by where the crown is positioned, your bite, your oral hygiene routine, and habits such as grinding. Your dentist will give you specific aftercare guidance at the end of your appointment.
The tooth preparation stage is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the appointment. As with any dental work involving preparation of a tooth, some sensitivity or mild discomfort can be expected in the days following treatment. This generally settles quickly. If you have any concerns after your appointment, our team is always happy to advise.
