General Dentistry in Golders Green, North London

BDS Dental is a long-established private dental practice on Finchley Road in Golders Green, NW11, offering comprehensive general dentistry for patients of all ages. Whether you are registering with us for the first time, bringing your family for routine care, or dealing with an urgent concern, our experienced team is here to help.

General dentistry is at the heart of what we do. It is where most patient relationships with the practice begin — and where we believe the most important work happens: keeping teeth healthy, catching problems early, and making sure every patient feels genuinely looked after.

Welcoming New Patients in Golders Green and Across North London

We welcome new patients from Golders Green, Hampstead, Hampstead Garden Suburb, and the surrounding areas of North London. As a private practice, we do not operate an NHS waiting list, and appointments are available for adults and children alike.

When you attend your first appointment with us, your dentist will take the time to listen to your concerns and understand your dental history before carrying out a full assessment of your teeth, gums, and overall oral health. There is no pressure and no rush. We would rather take the time to get things right than move quickly for the sake of it.

All our dentists are registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) and our practice is regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Our General Dentistry Services

We offer a full range of general dental treatments to support the long-term health of your teeth and gums. Below is an overview of our core general dentistry services.

Dental Check-Ups

Regular dental check-ups are the single most effective way to maintain your oral health and avoid more complex treatment further down the line. At your check-up, your dentist will examine your teeth and gums, check for early signs of decay, gum disease, or other concerns, review any X-rays taken, and discuss any treatment that may be needed. We will also advise on any areas of your oral hygiene routine that could be improved. How often you need to attend depends on your individual risk factors, and your dentist will advise accordingly.

Dental Hygiene Appointments

Our hygiene team provides professional teeth cleaning — including a thorough scale and polish — to remove plaque and tartar build-up that cannot be addressed by brushing and flossing alone. Regular hygiene appointments are an important part of preventing gum disease and keeping your smile looking its best. We can also provide tailored advice on your home care routine.

Direct Hygiene Access

You can now book an appointment directly with our dental hygienist without the need to see a dentist first. Direct access is available for patients who simply wish to book a hygiene appointment independently, without a prior dentist referral or consultation.

White (Composite) Fillings

We use tooth-coloured composite resin for all filling work, providing a natural-looking result that blends seamlessly with the surrounding tooth. White fillings are suitable for both front and back teeth and can also be used to replace older metal or amalgam fillings if you prefer a more discreet appearance. In situations where a cavity is too large to be restored with a filling, we will discuss whether an inlay, onlay, or crown may be more appropriate.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is required when the pulp inside a tooth becomes infected or inflamed — typically as a result of deep decay, a cracked tooth, or repeated dental work on the same tooth. The procedure involves removing the affected pulp tissue, cleaning and shaping the root canals, and sealing the tooth to prevent further infection. With modern techniques and local anaesthetic, root canal treatment is generally no more uncomfortable than having a filling, and it saves a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted.

Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease — ranging from early-stage gingivitis to more advanced periodontitis — is one of the most common dental conditions in adults and a leading cause of tooth loss. Early gum disease can often be managed through improved oral hygiene and professional cleaning. More established gum disease may require additional treatment including root surface debridement. Our team will assess the health of your gums at every check-up and advise on the most appropriate course of action if a problem is identified.

Minimally Invasive Dentistry

Where possible, we favour a conservative approach to treatment. This means using techniques that preserve as much of the natural tooth structure as possible and treating problems at the earliest stage, before more invasive intervention becomes necessary. We use air abrasion techniques in appropriate cases as an alternative to drilling, which can be particularly helpful for anxious patients or where only a small amount of decay needs to be removed.

Emergency Dental Appointments

If you are experiencing dental pain, have lost a filling or crown, broken a tooth, or have any other urgent concern, please contact the practice as soon as possible. We make every effort to accommodate urgent appointments for both registered and new patients.

General Dentistry for Children

We welcome children as patients and believe that establishing good dental habits early makes a significant difference to long-term oral health. Our team has considerable experience in putting nervous or apprehensive young patients at ease, and we take care to make every child’s visit a positive experience.

Younger patients benefit from the full range of preventive care available at the practice, including fluoride applications, fissure sealants, and personalised oral hygiene instruction. For children who may benefit from orthodontic assessment, our in-house specialist orthodontist, Dr. Farnaz Motamedi, is available for consultation.

Why Patients Stay with BDS Dental

BDS Dental has been caring for patients in Golders Green for decades. Long before Dr. Ian Davis and Dr. Ellie Bergin took over the practice, it had already built a strong reputation in the local community based on consistent, reliable, genuinely caring dentistry. That reputation is something both principals take seriously.

Many of our patients have been with us for years — and bring their children and grandchildren. We do not believe that good dentistry is simply about clinical skill, though that matters enormously. It is also about taking the time to understand each patient as an individual, communicating clearly, and never recommending treatment that is not genuinely needed.

Frequently Asked Questions About General Dentistry

What treatments are included under general dentistry?

General dentistry covers the full range of treatments needed to maintain the health of your teeth and gums. This includes routine dental check-ups, hygiene appointments, white fillings, root canal treatment, extractions, gum disease management, and preventive care such as fluoride applications and fissure sealants. At our Golders Green practice, we focus on early detection and thorough preventive care to help patients avoid more complex problems over time.

Are dental check-ups uncomfortable?

Routine dental check-ups are generally gentle, quick, and straightforward. Your dentist will examine your teeth, gums, and soft tissues, take X-rays if needed, and discuss anything of note. If you feel nervous about dental visits, please let us know when you book — we can take extra care to make the appointment as comfortable as possible and move at a pace that suits you.

Do you offer white fillings instead of metal ones?

Yes. We use tooth-coloured composite resin for all filling work at our practice. White fillings are natural-looking, durable, and suitable for both front and back teeth. They can also be used to replace existing metal amalgam fillings if you would prefer a more discreet finish. Your dentist will advise on the best material for your individual circumstances.

What happens if I need a filling?

If decay is identified at your check-up, your dentist will remove the affected material, clean and prepare the tooth, and restore it with a filling. Local anaesthetic is used to ensure you are comfortable throughout. The procedure typically takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on the size and position of the cavity, and you should be able to eat and drink normally within a short time afterwards.

How long does a routine appointment take?

A standard dental check-up takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. If you are also seeing the hygienist for a scale and polish, allow an additional 30 to 45 minutes. If treatment is identified at your check-up, this will usually be carried out at a separate appointment so that adequate time can be allocated. We always aim to run on time and will let you know in advance if an appointment is likely to be longer than usual.

Can I register with BDS Dental as a private patient?

Yes. We welcome new patients registering with the practice. As a fully private practice, we do not operate an NHS list. To register or to book an initial consultation, please get in touch with our team and we will be happy to help.
