Veneer treatment at BDS Dental takes place over at least two appointments. Here is what to expect at each stage.
Your dentist will examine your teeth, discuss your goals in detail, and explain whether veneers are the most appropriate treatment for you. If you decide to proceed, the tooth or teeth will be gently prepared by removing a very small amount of enamel from the front surface — no more than the thickness of the veneer itself — so the tooth remains the same size once it is fitted.
An impression of the tooth is taken and sent to a dental technician, along with shade-matching details so the veneer blends seamlessly with your other teeth. Local anaesthetic is available if needed, though many patients find they do not require it.
Once your custom veneer is ready, your dentist will place it on the tooth for you to review before it is bonded permanently in place using a specially formulated dental adhesive. Minor adjustments can be made at this stage.
We will ask you to return a week or so after fitting so we can check and polish the veneer and ensure you are entirely happy with the outcome. Only minor adjustments can be made at this point, so it is worth giving yourself a little time to get used to the veneer before requesting any changes.

The preparation process involves removing a very small amount of enamel — typically no more than half a millimetre — so the veneer sits flush with the surrounding teeth. This is a minimal and carefully controlled process. Some types of veneer require little or no preparation at all. Your dentist will always explain what is involved before proceeding so you can make an informed decision.
Porcelain veneers are crafted by a dental technician in a laboratory and are highly durable, stain-resistant, and natural-looking. Composite veneers are applied directly to the tooth by the dentist in a single appointment and tend to involve lower upfront costs, but may not last as long or achieve quite the same aesthetic result. Your dentist can advise on which is the more suitable option for you during your consultation.
Veneers are generally only recommended once the teeth and gums are in good health. If you have outstanding issues such as decay, gum disease, or grinding habits, these will usually need to be addressed first. A thorough examination at your initial appointment allows us to identify the most appropriate sequence of treatment for your individual needs.
Veneers work well for many patients, but they are not always the right solution. In some cases, teeth whitening, composite bonding, orthodontics, or a combination of treatments may deliver a better or more conservative outcome.
