BDS Dental offers Invisalign clear aligner treatment at our private practice on Finchley Road in Golders Green, NW11. Invisalign is one of the most widely used and clinically established clear aligner systems available, and at BDS Dental it is provided by our specialist orthodontist, Dr. Farnaz Motamedi.
If you are considering Invisalign or would like to find out whether it is the right option for your teeth, we welcome you to book a specialist consultation.
Invisalign is a system of custom-made, removable clear aligners that gradually move the teeth into their correct positions over the course of treatment. Rather than using fixed brackets and wires, each aligner is made from a thin, smooth plastic material that fits closely over the teeth and is virtually invisible when worn.
Because the aligners are removable, they can be taken out for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing — which means there are no dietary restrictions and no changes to your usual oral hygiene routine during treatment.
Invisalign treatment uses advanced 3D digital imaging to map out the entire course of tooth movement before treatment begins. This allows you to see a visualisation of your projected outcome at the consultation stage, before committing to treatment.
Invisalign can be used to treat a broad range of alignment and bite concerns in both adults and teenagers, including:
The suitability of Invisalign for your specific case will be assessed at your consultation. In some more complex situations, fixed braces may be clinically more appropriate, and Dr. Motamedi will advise you honestly on which option is likely to achieve the best result for your teeth.
Your Invisalign journey begins with a specialist consultation with Dr. Motamedi. She will examine your teeth and bite, take digital records, and — if Invisalign is suitable — use the Invisalign ClinCheck software to produce a 3D digital simulation of your treatment plan. You will be able to see the projected movement of your teeth from start to finish before any treatment begins.
Your aligners are manufactured to precise specifications based on your digital records. Each set is worn for approximately two weeks before being replaced with the next in the series. Every new aligner moves the teeth a small, carefully controlled amount, continuing the gradual repositioning begun by the previous one.
For Invisalign to work effectively, the aligners should be worn for at least 20 to 22 hours per day. They are removed for eating, drinking anything other than water, brushing, and flossing. After eating, it is important to brush your teeth before reinserting the aligners to maintain good hygiene throughout treatment.
You will attend periodic check-up appointments throughout treatment so Dr. Motamedi can assess how your teeth are responding to the aligners and make any adjustments to your plan if needed. These appointments are typically less frequent than with fixed braces, which is one of the practical advantages of Invisalign for patients with busy schedules.
It is normal to experience a sensation of pressure for the first day or two after switching to a new aligner. This is a sign that the aligner is working — the teeth are moving. Any discomfort is usually mild and short-lived, and can be managed with standard over-the-counter pain relief if needed.
Treatment duration varies depending on the complexity of the case. Mild to moderate alignment concerns can often be addressed in six to twelve months. More involved cases may take eighteen months or longer. Dr. Motamedi will give you a realistic estimate at your consultation, based on the specific movement required for your teeth.
Invisalign is an excellent option for many adult and teenage patients, particularly those who want a discreet treatment that fits around a professional or social lifestyle. However, it is not suitable for every case.
Fixed braces — including traditional metal braces or tooth-coloured ceramic alternatives — remain the most clinically reliable option for complex bite corrections or cases requiring significant tooth movement. They are also typically the preferred option for younger patients whose teeth and jaws are still developing, where close control over tooth movement is especially important.
Because Dr. Motamedi is a specialist in orthodontics rather than a provider of any single system, her recommendation is based on what will work best for your teeth — not on what is most commercially convenient. Some patients who visit other providers expecting Invisalign discover at their consultation that fixed braces would serve them better; others who assumed they would need braces find they are ideal Invisalign candidates. An honest assessment at the outset saves time, money, and disappointment further down the line.
For patients who would prefer fixed braces but do not want the appearance of traditional metal brackets, ceramic braces offer a less visible alternative. The brackets are made from porcelain or composite ceramic material in a tooth-coloured or clear finish, and are bonded to the front of the teeth in the same way as metal braces.
Ceramic brackets do not stain themselves, though the elastic bands used to hold the wire in place can pick up colour from certain foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, and red wine. These bands are replaced at each adjustment appointment, so any discolouration is only temporary.
Ceramic braces offer the clinical precision of fixed orthodontic treatment with a considerably more discreet appearance than metal. Dr. Motamedi will advise at your consultation whether they are a suitable option for your case.
Invisalign treatment at BDS Dental is carried out exclusively by Dr. Farnaz Motamedi, a fully qualified specialist orthodontist with a Fellowship in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons England — the highest qualification in the specialty. Dr. Motamedi trained at the Eastman Dental Hospital, achieved a distinction in her Master’s Degree from UCL, and was awarded the Eastman Clinical Excellence Prize. She continues to work part-time as an NHS orthodontic consultant.
This level of expertise makes a meaningful difference. A specialist can identify the nuances of your bite and alignment that a general dentist may miss, and can adapt your treatment plan accordingly if your teeth are not responding as expected.

The cost of Invisalign treatment depends on the complexity and duration of the case. For full pricing, please visit our dental fees page.
We offer flexible instalment payment to spread the cost of treatment. An initial payment of 35% of your total treatment fee is required, with the remaining balance payable in monthly instalments of approximately £250. No deposits are required to begin the process.
Your orthodontic consultation with Dr. Motamedi costs £176 (approximately 45 minutes). If you proceed with treatment, this fee is deducted in full from the cost of your treatment plan.
Invisalign can address both cosmetic alignment concerns and a range of functional bite issues, including overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite. The extent to which Invisalign is appropriate for your specific bite concern will be assessed at your consultation. For certain complex bite corrections, fixed braces may achieve a more precise outcome, and Dr. Motamedi will advise you accordingly.
Invisalign aligners are made from a clear, thin plastic and are designed to be as discreet as possible. In most social and professional settings, they are not noticeable to others. Some patients are also fitted with small tooth-coloured attachments to help the aligners apply more precise pressure to certain teeth — these are visible on close inspection but are generally unobtrusive in everyday settings.
If an aligner is lost or damaged, contact the practice as soon as possible. In most cases, we will advise you to move on to the next aligner in the series or revert to the previous one temporarily until a replacement can be produced. Aligners are custom-made, so a replacement will need to be ordered and may take a short time to arrive.
Yes — retainers are an essential part of any orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign. Once your aligners have moved the teeth into their final positions, a retainer is required to hold them there. Without retention, teeth naturally tend to drift back towards their original positions over time. Dr. Motamedi will discuss the most appropriate retention option for you at the end of your treatment.
Invisalign offers a version of its product specifically designed for teenage patients (Invisalign Teen), which includes features such as compliance indicators and additional replacement aligners. Whether Invisalign is appropriate for a teenager depends on the complexity of their case, their level of maturity, and their willingness to wear the aligners consistently. Dr. Motamedi will give you an honest assessment at the consultation.
